The Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Sana’a University, today discussed the Ph.D. dissertation proposal submitted by researcher Salwa Ali Nasher, titled "A Study of Discursive Styles and Variation in Human and AI Translation of Political Discourse from English into Arabic." The presentation was held as part of the academic research requirements for graduate programs in the department.
The proposal defense was conducted under the supervision of Professor of Translation, Prof. Abdulrahman Abdulrabbo, from the Department of English Language and Literature. The Examination and Judgment Committee comprised Prof. Abdulrahman Abdulrabbo, Assoc. Prof. Mohammed Sharafuddeen, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Bakri.
During the session, the researcher outlined the key axes of her research proposal, clarifying the research problem, objectives, scientific significance, proposed methodology, theoretical and conceptual frameworks, hypotheses, and analytical tools to be employed in examining discursive styles and variations in political texts translated by humans versus those translated using artificial intelligence technologies.
The discussion addressed several scientific and methodological aspects related to the dissertation topic, particularly the differences and intersections between human translation and AI-based translation in rendering political discourse from English into Arabic. It also examined the associated linguistic choices, discursive styles, and contextual nuances, thereby refining the analytical scope and establishing clear frameworks for comparative analysis between the two translation modalities.
Following the academic evaluation, the committee approved the dissertation proposal, praising its significance in the field of Translation Studies and its contribution to research at the intersection of translation, political discourse analysis, and artificial intelligence applications.
The defense was attended by several faculty members, scholars, and graduate students from the department as part of the university's ongoing commitment to supporting scientific research and fostering academic debate on translation and applied linguistics.
This discussion reflects the broader efforts of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Sana’a University to support graduate programs and encourage research addressing contemporary shifts in language and translation through modern analytical approaches.
