An expanded meeting was held today at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sana’a University, chaired by Prof. Mohammed Al-Bukhaiti, the University Rector. The meeting was dedicated to discussing mechanisms for continuous development and improvement at the faculty, and reviewing academic and institutional performance indicators in light of institutional development and quality assurance requirements.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Abdulhafed Thawabah, Assistant University Rector for Medical Faculties and Hospitals; Prof. Mohammed Al-Shehari, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; the Vice Deans for Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Graduate Studies, and Quality Assurance; Prof. Saleh Bahaj, National Expert; alongside members of the steering committee, a number of academic department heads, and academic program coordinators at the faculty.
The meeting addressed the follow-up of reports related to the evaluation of academic and institutional performance, reviewed mechanisms for tracking and implementing improvement plans, and examined completed items as well as those requiring completion. This aims to strengthen the quality assurance system and elevate performance levels across various academic and administrative fields.
Attendees also discussed ways to enhance integration between academic departments and programs, develop assessment tools and learning outcome measurement instruments, update the educational, laboratory, and training environments, and implement mechanisms for utilizing self-assessment results to make evidence- and data-based developmental decisions.
During the meeting, Prof. Mohammed Al-Bukhaiti emphasized that continuous development and improvement are not temporary procedural steps or responses to routine requirements, but rather a deeply rooted institutional approach and a shared responsibility borne by everyone—from academic leadership and faculty members to administrative staff and students.
The University Rector stressed that the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences represents one of the most prominent academic entities within the university, given its pivotal role in preparing the medical and health cadres needed by the nation. He noted that upgrading the quality of its graduates is a top priority in the university's plans due to its direct link to human health and community safety.
He explained that the university leadership will continue to provide the necessary support to implement improvement plans, emphasizing the importance of adhering to set timelines, activating periodic follow-up mechanisms, and translating recommendations into measurable, practical actions to ensure the sustainability of development rather than limiting it to documentation.
In turn, Prof. Mohammed Al-Shehari, the Faculty Dean, reviewed the key achievements in the path of quality and development, the challenges facing the educational process, and the necessary requirements to achieve the desired goals.
Prof. Al-Shehari pointed out that the faculty has taken tangible steps in several areas, most notably reviewing and updating program and course specifications, enhancing horizontal and vertical integration in the integrated medical curriculum, developing assessment tools according to specification tables and learning outcome matrices, improving the laboratory environment and clinical skills, and activating feedback from students and faculty members as a primary source for developmental decisions. He expressed high appreciation for the substantial support provided by the Sana’a University leadership to the faculty across various academic, administrative, and service domains.
The meeting concluded with a number of recommendations, foremost of which are formulating a detailed plan complete with a budget for the Quality Assurance Unit, defining responsibilities and timeframes, and organizing a memorial and tribute event in honor of the late Sana’a University and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences figure, Prof. Ahmed Al-Haddad—may Allah have mercy on him—in recognition of his long scientific and academic career and his contributions to serving the faculty and the university.
This meeting comes within the framework of the university and faculty leadership's commitment to instilling a culture of quality and institutional development, and enhancing efforts aimed at developing the educational process and elevating its outputs in compliance with quality requirements and standards, keeping pace with modern trends in medical education.
