Researcher Amira Taher Abdulrahman Mu’ajam was awarded a PhD degree in Science Curriculum and Teaching Methods for her dissertation titled: The Effectiveness of a Proposed Chemistry Curriculum Development Framework Based on Emerging Chemical Advances in Developing Future Thinking Skills and Scientific Sensibility among High School Students in the Republic of Yemen, which was submitted to the Department of Science Curriculum and Teaching Methods, Faculty of Education –Sana’a University. The dissertation defense was held on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
• Prof. Amat Al-Karim Taha Abu Zaid – Sana’a University – Internal Examiner and Chair.
• Prof. Azhar Mohammed Ahmed Ghalyoun – Sana’a University – Main Supervisor and Committee Member.
• Assoc. Prof. Fouad Mohammed Saeed Sailan – Amran University – External Examiner and Committee Member.
The study aimed to develop the chemistry curriculum in light of emerging advances in chemistry and assess the effectiveness of the proposed curriculum in developing future thinking skills and scientific sensibility among female high school students.
The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:
1. Emerging chemical advances were inadequately represented across the chemistry textbooks prescribed for secondary education.
2. Statistically significant differences were found between the mean scores of the pre- and post-tests measuring future thinking skills, as well as the cognitive and affective dimensions of scientific sensibility, with the results favoring the post-test.
Based on these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
• Developing chemistry and science curricula at all educational levels in light of emerging chemical and technological advances.
• Integrating emerging chemical advances, future thinking skills, and scientific sensibility into the chemistry curriculum for the second year of high school.
The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, postgraduate students, researchers, as well as the researcher's colleagues and family members.
