Sana’a – Sana’a University Media

Sana’a University has topped the list of the five best Yemeni universities included in the World Assessment Council’s University Directory, October 2026 edition, according to the international open database OpenAlex. The university recorded 8,946 research outputs and approximately 170,000 scholarly citations, ahead of Ibb, Taiz, and Dhamar universities.

The ranking data showed that Ibb University came second, with approximately 3,172 research outputs and 62,000 scholarly citations, followed by Taiz University in third place, with 3,544 research outputs and 57,000 citations. Dhamar University ranked fourth, with 2,732 research outputs and 49,000 citations.

On this occasion, Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bukhaiti, Rector of Sana’a University, affirmed that interest in scientific research is growing day by day. He noted the university’s commitment to directing scientific research and studies toward serving the community, contributing to addressing its issues, and meeting its needs, thereby strengthening the university’s role in development and knowledge creation.

The University Rector congratulated the university’s academics, researchers, students, and all its staff on this achievement. He praised their efforts to advance scientific research and strengthen the university’s academic standing, urging them to continue their contributions, intensify research efforts, and prioritize research quality and publication in peer-reviewed journals, thereby enhancing the university’s scientific standing and improving the quality of its research output.

Sana’a University’s leading position on the list reflects the scale of its research output and the impact of its research, as measured by scholarly citation indicators. It also underscores the importance of continuing to develop the scientific research system and encouraging researchers to produce high-quality studies that serve the community and strengthen the university’s presence at scientific forums locally and internationally.

This is consistent with the findings published by the Nature Index, an international indicator specializing in tracking the research output of scientific institutions. The index monitors original research published in a selected group of 178 scientific journals covering the natural, health, applied, and social sciences. It measures research output using two main indicators: the number of research articles and the institution’s share of contributions to those articles, taking into account the proportion of contributions made by researchers and institutions involved in collaborative publications.
